We Bought a Robot.

Nairobi? Robob? Roberto? Olive?
I have a bad habit of buying production gear.
Anyone who's worked with me can attest to this. I'll see something, convince myself it's the missing piece to our productions, buy it immediately, and then proceed to use it three times before it quietly retires to a shelf in the studio. It's an expensive personality trait.
This robot is different.
After testing just about every prosumer motion control system on the market, we finally landed on a portable six-axis camera robot that can travel to virtually any production. It's compact enough to fit into our workflow, powerful enough for commercial productions, and, unlike a lot of gear purchases, immediately proved its value on set.
We're calling it Nairobi. Unless Robob wins the office vote. Or Olive (EVO(O)) as our socials team calls it.
The funny thing about motion control is that most people assume it's about flashy camera moves. And yes, the robot can pull off smooth push-ins, dramatic reveals, sweeping arcs, and movements that would be nearly impossible to execute consistently by hand. That's fun, but that's not why we bought it.
The real value is repeatability.
Imagine you're launching apparel in 6 different colors.
Or a skincare line with twelve different products. Every product needs to feel like it's part of the same campaign, which means the framing, camera movement, focus, speed, and timing all need to match perfectly. Traditionally, your crew recreates those shots manually. They're incredibly talented, but humans aren't robots. Every take takes time and ends up just a little different.
Now we build the move once.
We position the camera, set keyframes, assign focus targets, and map out exactly how we want the camera to travel through space. Once it's programmed, the robot can repeat that move over and over with microscopic precision. Swap out the product, press play, and it performs the exact same move again. And again. And again.
That consistency unlocks a surprising number of creative possibilities.
For brands with multiple SKUs, it dramatically speeds up production. Instead of spending valuable shoot time trying to recreate a camera move, our crew can focus on styling, lighting, and making each product look its best. The art team swaps in the next product while the robot patiently waits to do exactly what it just did thirty seconds ago.
It also makes post-production significantly stronger.
Some of the cleanest commercial edits rely on identical camera moves. Match cuts, composited product swaps, visual effects and animated transitions all become easier when every frame lines up perfectly. Our editors spend less time fighting inconsistencies and more time making the final piece look expensive. Most viewers will never know a robot was involved, but they'll notice the polish.
One of the biggest surprises has been how approachable the technology actually is. Programming a move sounds intimidating until you realize it works a lot like building keyframes in an editing program. We move the camera where we want it, save that position, move somewhere else, save another position, adjust our focus points, and let the software connect everything together. Within minutes, we've created a repeatable move that would be nearly impossible to execute manually.
Even better, the system gives us flexibility on set.
If a client suddenly wants another angle or a slightly different movement, we don't have to start from scratch. We can manually reposition the robot, adjust a few keyframes, and build a new move without losing momentum. That's especially valuable on productions where every minute matters.
And despite what the headlines might suggest, robots aren't replacing production crews.
They still need a director making creative decisions. A cinematographer shaping the image. A gaffer building the lighting. An art department creating the environment. A producer making sure everything somehow happens on time and under budget.
The robot doesn't replace expertise, it amplifies it.
That's ultimately why we invested in this system. Not because robots are trendy, but because it allows us to make better work more efficiently. It gives our clients more consistency across campaigns, more production value for product launches, and more creative flexibility when ideas inevitably evolve during a shoot.
We've already put Nairobi to work on its first Shark Ninja commercial and after spending a few days learning the system, this won't be one of those purchases that quietly collects dust in the equipment room.
Although if it eventually learns how to brush my teeth, I'll consider that a bonus.
